STILLWELL STAR NAVY NO. 1056 | CIGAR REVIEW

MAY 26, 2022 - PHIL KURUT, COMEDY - CIGARS - MUSIC

STILLWELL STAR NAVY NO. 1056 (6 x 52)

WRAPPER: ECUADORIAN HABANO

BINDER: MEXICAN SAN ANDRÉS

FILLER: NICARAGUA; PIPE TOBACCOS - RED VIRGINIA, GOLDEN VIRGINIA, ORIENTALS, LATAKIA

Navy begins its voyage rather quietly with some sweetness, spice, and earth. All three are very mild, almost as though the ship is still anchored. The same can be said for the retrohale and the finish, but the finish adds some leather, which holds the strongest presence as of yet.

Draw and smoke output are perfect.

Smoke pours off the foot. Wood and spice tucked away in there.

A bit of eastern spices toy around within puffs of earth and distant sweetness. Black pepper spice wanders around solo from time to time. Leather consistently shows up on the finish.

Superb burn and ash.

Navy’s ash breaks off cleanly, and within a handful of puffs, I’m met with prune and a mixture of creamy milk and dark chocolate. Earth falls to the background but sticks around.

The retrohale shows some interesting movement. The top of the retrohale brings prune, moves to general spice in the middle, and ends with eastern spices.

As I type, the finish moves around from coffee and then adds some prune. Gentle spice, more of a mild tingling sensation, keeps the palate awake and ready.

Exhales provide thick and heavy plumes of smoke, which don’t last near as long in the room after I swapped out the filters in my air purifier. They’re supposed to be better equipped than the last filters I had, and they seem to be living up to that claim. Looks like I missed out on an unboxing video opportunity. On second thought, I don’t know that I really missed out.

I already commented on the burn and ash, so I’ll let the picture remind you.

Coffee pours through from draw to nose to finish. Sweet cream joins that coffee on the draws. The retrohale continues to add some prune, and the finish tags its coffee with some sweetness. I dig it.

I could be wrong, but for everything this cigar put out, it seemed like it wanted to give a little more. That might just be me wanting more, but whatever. Either way, it was an enjoyable ride.

SMOKE TIME: 1 hr. 36 mins.

RATING: 3 / 4 - An enjoyable ride.
